Swap-free Islamic accounts: how they actually work and where the alternative cost appears

A swap-free account is not a cost-free account. We explain how these accounts work, the conditions brokers attach to them, and the alternative charges that can replace overnight interest.

In margin trading, open positions are revalued at the end of the trading day and subject to a swap, or overnight financing: an amount credited or debited that reflects the interest rate differential between the two currencies in a pair, plus a markup applied by the broker. A swap-free account removes that specific line.

What is actually removed The waiver applies to the overnight financing line only. Every other cost remains: the spread between bid and ask, the commission on commission-based accounts, deposit and withdrawal charges, and inactivity fees where they apply. Comparing a swap-free account to a standard one on that single line is therefore incomplete.

The conditions brokers attach Terms vary widely between brokers. The most common ones are:

- **A time limit on the waiver**: many brokers grant the exemption for a limited number of days per position, after which an administrative charge begins. - **Excluded instruments**: pairs with wide interest differentials, metals and some indices may be excluded, or carry a fixed charge instead. - **A fixed administrative fee**: a set amount per lot per night sometimes replaces the variable swap. - **Eligibility checks**: a declaration or verification may be required before activation, and availability can be restricted by country. - **Anti-abuse clauses**: brokers usually reserve the right to withdraw the feature if it is used in strategies built around holding positions purely to avoid financing costs.

Where the real cost shows up When a broker removes the swap line, it gives up a revenue stream. The effect can appear as a slightly wider spread on the swap-free account type, a fixed administrative charge, or a short exemption window. None of this is inherently unfair, but it does mean total cost is the correct basis for comparison, not the presence of the feature alone.

How to compare in practice Estimate your monthly trade count, your average holding period and your lot sizes, then calculate the full cost on that basis: spread times volume, plus commission, plus any nightly administrative charge after the exemption ends. A trader who closes positions the same day gains little from a swap waiver. A trader holding positions for weeks will feel the difference clearly.

A note on Sharia compliance Removing the overnight financing line is a technical adjustment made by the broker. It is not a blanket certification that the product or the trading method is Sharia-compliant. The religious ruling on instruments such as CFDs and margin trading remains a subject of scholarly discussion, and that judgement rests with the trader and the scholars they consult.

Before you open the account Ask the broker for the official swap-free terms, and check the exemption period, the list of excluded instruments and the value of the replacement charge. These details are normally published on the account terms page or in the broker's fee schedule, and that document is the only binding reference.
